Tree Braids – Protective Hairstyle for Natural Hair

Tree Braids – First Attempt

At 26 weeks and 6 days post relaxer, I made the mistake of trying tree braids.  The stylist that I used was recommended by a friend; however, the stylist obviously was not honest about her experience with tree braids.  I was looking for a style that was friendly to my own curly hair but that also allowed me to have a straight style.  I thought Tree Braids would be a good option.

I let her complete the style, although I could see it was not coming out well, and then I paid her and went home knowing that I was going to take them out that night.  It took about 4 hours for her to do the style.  It took less than 30 minutes for her to remove the tree braids after I went back to the salon.   That was my first lesson in being more assertive about my hair.

I wish she had just said she could not install tree braids instead of wasting my time, bulk hair and gas.  Be careful about who you let touch your hair.  Not every stylist, even those with a license, is qualified to do natural hair.
