Shampoo Bar – Sulfate Free Shampoo

I took the plunge and tried a shampoo bar for my natural hair, a sulfate free shampoo bar.

There are tons of companies that sell natural hair products and in this case I went with Chagrin Valley Soap & Craft Company. I purchased 20 samples, some skin bars and some shampoo bars. At least one shampoo bar can also be used for skin. the sample shampoo bars are 1.5 to 2 ounces each. They are hand cut so the shapes vary; however, most of my samples were 2.5 inches long and about .5 inch high in a rectangle shape.

The first shampoo bar that I tried is the Mud & Clay. This bar is made of rhassoul clay and, per the website, is used to stimulate and tones the scalp; restore luster to over processed, overworked and dull hair; clean by removing excess oils without removing all of the natural protective sebum; enhance volume; and leaves hair soft and shiny.

Ingredients: Saponified oils of olive, castor bean, coconut, jojoba, sunflower, virgin shea butter, rice bran; aloe vera; Dead Sea mud; rhassoul clay; water; sea kelp; essential oils of lavender, lemongrass, and lemon; and rosemary oil extract.

I used the shampoo bar 4 times so far and think I can get several more washes out of the sample shampoo bar so long as I store it properly. I plan to order the full size bar once I am finished with the rest of my shampoo bar samples. It does not lather much, which is fine. I lather the bar in my hands and then add that lather to my hair. At some points I did use the shampoo bar directly on my hair, which is easier than the two step process of lathering in my hands.

I found that my hair was not at all dried out after using the Mud & Clay shampoo bar. There are a few youtube videos showing women using mud treatments for their hair or mud shampoo. They all tend to rave about the mud shampoo and I am now able to join that raving. My hair felt clean but also moisturized. I always followed my wash with my homemade leave in but I do intend to try a wash without adding anything additional to my hair.

If you have the opportunity, I do recommend that you try a sulfate free shampoo bar. I may never go back to regular shampoo, unless I need to wash out silicone products or wash out some other product build up with a sulfate product.
