Kinky Twists – Protective Hairstyle

I’ve had this kinky twist protective style in for just over two weeks.  I have been back to the salon, twice, to have sections replaced that were loose and nearly slipping out.  I have photos of one example of a loose twists below.

This is my first ever single braid/twist extensions install in my adult life. I had braids at 13 years old but took them out the very next day since they were so heavy and itchy.

These Kinky Twists done with Janet Collection Afro Kinky Bulk 24″ hair, 3 full packs and a tiny bit of a 4th pack to do the last section (about 12 twists). I had 103 twists in my head after the install, but after pieces were reinstalled, I now have 102 twists.  I had two twists combined that seemed too small.

My twists are longer than the usual so the braider “feed in” additional hair to get the length I wanted just like feed in cornrows. I had been looking at Puffy Twists aka Fluffy Twists or Bomb Twists but they did not seem to fit my face. I checked out a salon that does them and was told I’d only have 24 – 28 twists on my entire head. I just could not picture it, even after putting 25 twists in my own hair (without extensions), so I went with large, kinky twists.

These Kinky Twists took 5 hours to install and curl (using hot water) and the cost was $100. The salon normally charges $80 for Kinky Twists but I needed them a little longer so my own hair would be fully covered by the weave. I initially had 3 different braiders (2 at a time) and they all did my hair in different sizes. I was not happy with that and in the end had a section redone by the salon owner. She finished my install without the additional 2 braiders.

After less than one week of wearing the twists, I was able to place my finger between my scalp and the beginning of the twists.  This is not normal and was an indication that the twists were not installed correctly.  When I went in the second time to have twists reinstalled, a different braider worked on my hair since the owner was not available.  I went back a third time and the owner fixed the loose twists.

If this style last more than a few weeks without the twists falling out, I intend to keep these twists in for 2 months.

I wish I had used this style during my transition from relaxed to natural hair. For some reason during my transition I was afraid to get extensions installed, and definitely not kinky extensions. Now that I have them, I wish I had installed them years ago, even if only for 2 months at a time.
