Straw Set Natural Hair – Perfect Camouflage Hairstyle for Transitioners

Straw Set Natural Hair

You can straw set natural hair and transitioning hair to get an idea of what your natural hair might look like once you transition from relaxed to natural.  If you are impatient, and you want to see what your naturally curly hair could look like today, and not in 6 months, 12 months or 2 years, you can try a straw set.  A straw set is exactly what it sounds like, hair set with drinking straws.

A straw set will help you to easily camouflage the difference between your relaxed hair and your new growth.  A straw set will allow you to have less stress on the line of demarcation, the point on the hair strand at which the relaxed texture and new growth meet.  You do not have to style a straw set, but instead you can just comb it with your fingers (called finer combing).

Just like it will take time to learn to roller set your transitioning hair, it will also take a few tries to straw set natural hair.  You can always have this style done at the salon; however, given the length of time it takes to cut and bobby pin straws into your head, it may be pretty expensive to have a professional stylist do a straw set.

For your straw set you will need:

Drinking straws (or straw type rollers – various brands)

If you want larger curls, you can also use perm rods.

End papers, Bobby pins, Setting lotion

You should start with clean, detangled hair that is towel dried with setting lotion applied to the hair.  You will need to part your hair into small sections, usually no more than ½ inch per section.  Use the end papers for the ends of your relaxed hair and roll your hair around the straw.  Secure with a bobby bin.  Do not remove the straws until your hair is completely dry.  You can use a hood dryer or air dry, whichever you choose.  Remove the straws and separate the curls.

When you straw set natural hair, the style should last for about 2 weeks.
